ATHENS, Ohio — Iranian filmmaker Sina Mahdavi is gaining recognition on the American independent film festival circuit with his short film 'That Night', which has received multiple awards and festival selections across the United States.
The film has earned two honors: Best Ohio Short at the Columbus International Film & Animation Festival and the Silver Chance Award in the Best Student Short Film category at the Silver Chance International Film Festival.
These awards mark an important milestone in Mahdavi’s filmmaking career as he continues to develop his creative voice in the United States.
From Iranian Cinema to American Independent Filmmaking
Originally from Iran, Mahdavi brings a multidisciplinary background in philosophy, cinema and professional film production to his work.
He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Mofid University and a master's degree in cinema from the University of Tehran. He is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production at Ohio University.
Before moving to the United States, Mahdavi worked across different areas of Iran's film and entertainment industry, including editing, content acquisition and digital streaming production. His professional experience includes work with Filimo, one of Iran's major streaming platforms.
His transition from the Iranian film industry to independent filmmaking in the United States represents a new chapter in his career, combining his previous professional experience with a growing body of creative work.
Festival Recognition for 'That Night'
'That Night' has attracted attention through its participation in film festivals, earning recognition in multiple categories. Its Best Ohio Short award at the Columbus International Film & Animation Festival highlights its place within Ohio's independent filmmaking community, while its Silver Chance Award reflects recognition beyond the local festival circuit.
For Mahdavi, these achievements are part of a broader effort to establish an international filmmaking career and develop projects that engage audiences across cultural boundaries.
Beyond Narrative Filmmaking
Alongside his narrative film projects, Mahdavi is developing “Stories That Heal,” a community-based participatory filmmaking initiative focused on individuals affected by substance use disorder in Southeast Ohio.
The project aims to help participants tell their own stories through accessible filmmaking workshops, short documentary production and community screenings.
By bringing together filmmaking, community engagement and storytelling, the initiative represents an expansion of Mahdavi's creative practice beyond traditional narrative cinema.
Looking Ahead
As Mahdavi continues his MFA studies at Ohio University, he is working on new film projects while expanding his involvement in film festivals and community-based media initiatives.
The recognition received by 'That Night' represents another step in his development as an Iranian filmmaker working within the American independent film landscape.
Through both narrative filmmaking and participatory media projects, Mahdavi aims to continue exploring the possibilities of cinema as a medium for storytelling, artistic expression and meaningful human connection.
