DETROIT — Spiration Films is making its debut with its first documentary in production, ‘The Spirit Moves Through Motown.’ The film explores the life and faith of Jack Ashford, the last surviving Funk Brother, whose legendary percussion helped shape Motown’s iconic sound.
Founded by Monica Graves, Michael Durio, Ernie J. Paris, and Nat Graves, Spiration Films is committed to creating films that inspire hope and celebrate the human spirit. Guided by the motto “Breathe Inspiration,” the company’s first project delves into the spiritual roots of Motown, highlighting how faith influenced Ashford’s journey from a young musician to a cornerstone of music history as one of the Funk Brothers, Motown’s studio musicians.
‘The Spirit Moves Through Motown’ offers an intimate look at Ashford’s life, featuring exclusive interviews with Ashford and iconic Motown musicians, rare footage of recording sessions, and a soulful soundtrack showcasing his percussion work. “This documentary celebrates Motown’s spiritual legacy and its power to unite audiences worldwide,” Graves said.
The film will premiere at select venues in 2026, followed by a limited theatrical release and availability on major streaming platforms. Through Aug. 21, Spiration Films is offering supporter benefits through a Seed&Spark campaign; all donations through the site are tax-deductible.
