PARIS — 'EXPOSE,' a 30-minute independent drama written and directed by 25-year-old filmmaker Ayşe Balta, will make its world premiere Oct. 25, 2026, at Vue Cinema in Wood Green, London.

Inspired by the real-life experiences of young people from migrant communities, the film explores bullying, social media pressure, gang culture and the importance of solidarity among teenagers navigating contemporary urban life.

Produced by Perspective Cinema, 'EXPOSE' marks Balta's directorial debut and features an entirely first-time cast of young performers ages 13 to 17 from Turkish migrant families living in London.

What distinguishes the project is not only its subject matter but also the collective filmmaking process behind it. Developed without institutional funding, the production brought together young people, volunteer filmmakers and community members to create a film rooted in their own experiences.

A Story About Growing Up in London's Migrant Communities

At the center of 'EXPOSE' is Barış, a teenager living in one of London's migrant neighborhoods.

Each morning, Barış wakes early to deliver newspapers before returning home to exercise and prepare for school. His daily routine is overshadowed by a group of girls known as the "TikToker Girls," who frequently mock and belittle him.

But the situation takes an unexpected turn when Barış discovers that a group of students forming a gang at school has begun targeting the same girls who have been bullying him.

Through Barış's experiences, the film examines the pressures facing young people, including school bullying, social exclusion, online culture and the growing influence of gangs.

Rather than presenting these issues from an outsider's perspective, 'EXPOSE' draws on the experiences of the young people involved in its creation.

From Community Workshops to the Cinema Screen

The making of 'EXPOSE' began long before cameras started rolling.

Over approximately one year, the young participants attended acting and filmmaking workshops, gaining practical experience while developing their confidence and creative abilities.

Balta, who is based in Paris, traveled between Paris and London almost every weekend throughout the project to work directly with the participants.

For every young performer involved, 'EXPOSE' represents a first experience acting on screen.

The cast consists of teenagers from Turkish migrant families whose roots extend across different regions of Anatolia. Their participation reflects the project's commitment to making cinema accessible to young people whose experiences are often underrepresented.

The workshops encouraged participants to express themselves creatively, develop teamwork skills and discover how storytelling can become a means of communicating their experiences.

The resulting film is both a dramatic narrative and the outcome of a community-based artistic process.

Independent Filmmaking Built on Solidarity

Filming took place in February 2026 across several London neighborhoods, particularly Enfield, as well as in York, England.

The production received no financial support from institutions or organizations.

Instead, the film was made possible through the voluntary contributions of its director, crew and members of the community.

Post-production was completed in Paris, where professional artists and technicians also contributed their expertise voluntarily.

The creative team includes director of photography and colorist Felix Joseph, editor Selma Altın, composer İnan Altın, art director Yavuz Fazlıoğlu, sound designer Thierry Delor and costume designer Gülfem Özdoğan.

Selma and İnan Altın played particularly important roles in Balta's development as a filmmaker.

Her involvement in the collective filmmaking process behind 'The Neighborhood' helped shape her understanding of cinema as an art form that could be learned through participation and collaboration.

Both artists subsequently contributed to 'EXPOSE,' taking part in the workshops and supporting the film's creative development.

A Young Director's Vision for Accessible Cinema

For Balta, 'EXPOSE' represents more than her first directorial credit.

The project reflects her belief that filmmaking should be accessible to ordinary people, particularly young people who may not have opportunities to participate in professional artistic productions.

In her director's statement, Balta emphasizes the importance of passing filmmaking knowledge to younger generations, from cinematography and acting to editing, sound and storytelling.

"Our young people need another choice, another voice, another dream," Balta said.

Her approach challenges the idea that filmmaking must depend on large budgets, established institutions or conventional routes into the industry.

Instead, 'EXPOSE' demonstrates how young people and independent artists can work together to create films that reflect their communities and address issues affecting their lives.

The production also highlights the educational potential of cinema, providing opportunities for participants to gain confidence, collaborate and express themselves through art.

London World Premiere and Plans for a European Tour

'EXPOSE' will hold its world premiere Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, at the 400-seat Vue Cinema in Wood Green, London.

The film is then scheduled to have its Paris premiere Nov. 16, 2026, at Théâtre Traversière.

Following these screenings, the filmmakers aim to take 'EXPOSE' on a European tour, reaching audiences in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The proposed tour will include discussions and question-and-answer sessions, creating opportunities for audiences to engage with the film's themes and the young people behind its creation.

By combining independent filmmaking with community participation, 'EXPOSE' seeks to demonstrate how cinema can provide a platform for young voices and bring attention to the challenges facing a new generation.

For Balta and the young cast, the London premiere marks the culmination of a yearlong creative journey — and the beginning of their filmmaking ambitions.
