Dreams Don’t Retire: Mike Mahoney Brings 'We Were Golden' to Life

Some people spend a lifetime collecting stories. Mike Mahoney is turning his into a film.

At 78, Mahoney is developing 'We Were Golden,' a feature inspired by his life, the music that shaped him and his memories of Southern California in the 1960s.

Born and raised in California, Mahoney came of age amid the region's surf culture, rock 'n' roll, cars and rapidly changing social landscape. He says those years—and the people and experiences that came with them—became part of his identity. Decades later, they are forming the foundation of his next creative chapter.

A Life Becoming a Film

'We Were Golden' draws from Mahoney's firsthand experience of California during a period that helped shape American popular culture. The film follows young friends in Southern California in 1967 who bond over surfing, music and dreams of making it big.

Led by Mikey and his closest friends, the group forms a band and navigates romance, rivalry, performances and the challenges of growing up. As the Vietnam War and an uncertain future cast a shadow over their lives, friendships are tested and tragedy forces them to confront how quickly youth can disappear.

Decades later, a forgotten recording brings the friends back together. With a new generation carrying their legacy forward, they have another chance to return to the stage and reconnect with the dreams they once shared.

Mahoney's goal is not simply to recreate a California that exists in memory. He wants to introduce younger viewers to the energy and possibility he associates with the era while grounding the story in personal experience.

Where Film and Music Meet

Music is central to the project and has been part of Mahoney's story for more than half a century. At 75, he entered a recording studio to record songs he had written 55 years earlier. What began as a legacy album for his children and grandchildren grew into a larger creative project.

Mahoney has written an original soundtrack for 'We Were Golden,' with songs intended to reflect the film's characters, memories and relationships. The title song, “We Were Golden,” was co-written and produced with David Blackburn.

The music also connects to Mahoney's band, Mikey's in the Mustang, whose sound draws on the California music that influenced him. For Mahoney, songs can bring back a person, a place or an entire moment in time, and that idea is woven into the film.

Mahoney's journey from 1960s California to the development of a feature film and original soundtrack reflects a creative life still moving forward. Rather than trying to repeat the past, he is using it as material for something new.
