CELLENO, Italy — The Ghost Village of Celleno, known locally as Il Borgo Fantasma, placed third in a filming-location initiative promoted by the Lazio regional government and the Lazio Film Commission.

The village’s proposal, led by tourism delegate Caterina Franceschini, received 86 points. The initiative supports audiovisual production across the region surrounding Rome.

The recognition follows international attention for Celleno, including its appearance in a Telegraph roundup of Italian ghost towns described as “lost in time.” Located in Tuscia, north of Rome, the medieval settlement sits on a tuff hill surrounded by volcanic landscapes, cliffs and valleys.

Much of the historic village was abandoned after earthquakes in the 20th century prompted residents to relocate. Its stone alleys, castle ruins, piazzas and panoramic views have since made it a potential setting for historical, fantasy, thriller and post-apocalyptic productions.

Celleno has previously hosted productions including 'The Winemaker’s Son,' 'The Monk Who Won the Apocalypse' and Netflix’s 'Luna Nera.' According to the village’s announcement, Celleno is about 90 minutes from Rome and Cinecittà Studios and about 30 minutes from the Orvieto exit on the A1 motorway.

A new promotional video is being produced to present the village’s architecture and production potential to directors, producers and location managers at international film markets.

“This milestone validates our long-term vision to promote the Ghost Village of Celleno as a premier cultural and cinematic hub,” Franceschini said.

Mayor Luca Beraldo thanked the Lazio region, the film commission and Franceschini for their work. He said the recognition could support cultural tourism and economic activity while bringing greater international visibility to the area.
