CHICAGO — Randall Media has announced the release of its latest short film, 'Love to Love You Baby', written and directed by Arnetta Randall. An exploration of sexuality, religion and Blackness, the film stars E’myri Crutchfield (Netflix’s 'Forever', RZA’s 'One Spoon of Chocolate') and Chicago’s own Sherrice Eaglin ('Chicago P.D.', 'The Chi').
'Love to Love You Baby' follows Jean as she escapes her strict, religious parents by moving in with her childhood friend, Tina — only to discover that Tina has a wilder lifestyle than she could have imagined.
The film is inspired by the Donna Summer song of the same name, and by Summer’s early life growing up in a religious family at odds with her career. Jean, a pastor’s child with a strict mother, wants to break out and live life on her own terms; her friend Tina offers encouragement and a way out. “I chose to make Jean a sex worker because it’s the antithesis of being a pastor’s kid, and to examine how sex work can offer agency — but that there are limitations to that agency,” Randall said.
“This is my best film yet,” Randall said. She hopes the short will open doors not just for her, but for more stories centering Black and queer characters.
