Tamara Hansen On Script Supervision, Collaboration And 'His & Hers'
Script supervisor Tamara Hansen discusses collaboration, continuity and lessons from productions including 'His & Hers,' 'The Iron Claw' and 'Bodies Bodies Bodies.'
From independent cinema to major studio films and internationally successful television series, Tamara Hansen has established herself as a script supervisor and creative collaborator. Her credits include productions for Netflix, A24, Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount and FX, with projects including 'The Iron Claw,' 'Bodies Bodies Bodies,' 'A Murder at the End of the World,' 'The Bride!' and the Netflix series 'His & Hers.'
How did your transition from photography to script supervision happen?
“I came to New York City to do my master’s in photography, but after I graduated, I realized I didn’t want to do photography anymore,” Hansen said. After working at a Manhattan talent agency representing cinematographers, she began taking production assistant jobs. A line producer encouraged her to explore script supervision.
How would you describe the true scope of the job?
“I like to say I represent the director in post and the editor on set,” Hansen said.
Hansen said exceptional script supervision requires balancing trust with the need to anticipate problems. One of her favorite responsibilities is identifying a missing shot that will complete a scene. While working with Bassam Tariq on 'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,' she suggested an additional shot during a long fight-sequence shoot to help cover Mahershala Ali’s performance.
Because script supervisors work across departments, Hansen prioritizes open communication. “Making a film or a TV show is a team effort—always,” she said.
Technology has changed the role, from handwritten notes and digital cameras to laptops and tools such as QTake. Hansen said adaptability remains essential, particularly when technology fails and the work returns to watching the action beside the camera.
Her advice for filmmakers centers on respect, fairness and collaboration. “There’s not one way to get to the finish line,” she said. “The biggest thing is to be respectful and fair to the people you’re working with.”
